sense
The sensory system is the part of the nervous system responsible for processing sensory information. The sensory system consists of sensory receptors, afferent neurons, and the parts of the brain involved in information processing. The senses are the means by which living beings perceive and recognize other organisms and the characteristics of their environment—in other words, they are translations of the physical world into the mind. The most well-known are five: sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell, but there is consensus in the scientific community that humans possess many more. However, there is no agreement on the exact number, as this depends on the not-so-solid definition of what constitutes a sense.
