backlink
Backlinks, also known as inbound links, are links that lead to a website page. In basic terminology, a backlink is any link received by a web node (web page, directory, site, or top-level domain) from another web node. Inbound links were originally important (before the advent of search engines) as a primary means of web navigation; today, their importance lies in Search Engine Optimization (SEO). The number of backlinks is an indication of the popularity or importance of that website or page (for example, this is used by Google to determine a web page's PageRank). Besides SEO, a web page's backlinks can be of personal, cultural, or semantic interest: they indicate who is being attracted to that page. SEO also has the advantage of making links appear in search engines.
