Larry Sanger

Lawrence Mark Sanger was born on July 16, 1968, in Bellevue, Washington, USA. He was raised in Anchorage, Alaska, USA. Along with Jimmy Wales, he is recognized as a co-founder, in 2001, of the free Wikipedia project. He is a philosopher with a doctorate in philosophy from Ohio State University. In March 2000, Sanger was hired by Wales' company, Bomis, as editor-in-chief of Nupedia, a project to create a free encyclopedia. In response to frustration with Nupedia's slow progress, in January 2001 Sanger proposed the creation of a wiki to improve article development, giving rise to Wikipedia. Sanger oversaw the Wikipedia project, named it, and formulated much of its original policy. In 2002, he left Wikipedia and became a critic of it, especially regarding the unreliability of the information it disseminated. Sanger sought to remedy this deficiency by working on new projects: the Digital Universe, launched in 2005, and Citizendium, launched on March 25, 2007. Currently, he works on an educational video portal, WatchKnowLearn.
