Library Science

Library science is an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary field of knowledge that studies the practices, perspectives, and applications of methods for representing and managing information and knowledge in different information environments such as libraries, documentation centers, and research centers.

Currently, the field is intertwined with several other areas, mainly Information Science and Documentation.

The world's first school of Library Science was created by Melvil Dewey, who not only participated in the creation of the American Library Association (ALA), but also created the Dewey Decimal Classification

Other prominent figures such as Johannes Gutenberg and Gabriel Naudé, as well as periods like the Renaissance and the French Revolution, are also linked to the history of the field. Currently, there are approximately 30,000 librarians in Brazil, registered with the 15 Regional Councils across the country.

In Brazil, the librarian profession is regulated by the Federal Council of Librarianship (CFB).
