Scientific classification

The term scientific classification or biological classification refers to the way biologists group and categorize species of living beings, both extinct and extant. Modern scientific classification has its roots in the system of Carl Linnaeus (or Carolus Linnaeus), who grouped species according to the morphological characteristics they shared.
