Analysis is the process of decomposing a complex substance or topic into its various constituent elements in order to gain a better understanding of it. The technique has been applied in the study of mathematics and logic since before Aristotle, although analysis as a formal concept is a relatively recent development; it was used by philosophers such as Alhazen, Descartes, Galileo Galilei, and Isaac Newton as a practical method for discovering physical phenomena.
