Bing
Bing, formerly Live Search, Windows Live Search, and MSN Search, identified by its codename during the testing phase, is Microsoft's search engine, designed to compete with industry leaders Google and Yahoo!. Revealed by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer on May 28, 2009, at the "All Things D" conference in San Diego, Bing is a replacement for Live Search and was fully released on June 1, 2009. On June 4, 2009, just three days after its launch, Bing reached second place in online searches, surpassing Yahoo! Search and trailing only Google Search. On that day, the search engine accounted for 16.2% of searches in the United States, while Yahoo! accounted for 10.2%. Globally, Bing represents 5.6% compared to Yahoo!'s 5.1%. The improvements include the addition of related searches (called the "Explorer panel," on the left side of the search results, based on the semantic technology of PowerSet, a Microsoft search company acquired in 2008), and search suggestions as you type (increasing search history). The last survey conducted in 2012 ranked Bing fifth in the world search engine market.
