Hypertext Transfer Protocol
The Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) is a communication protocol used for distributed and collaborative hypermedia information systems. Its use for obtaining interconnected resources led to the establishment of the World Wide Web. Coordinated by the World Wide Web Consortium and the Internet Engineering Task Force, it culminated in the publication of a series of Requests for Comments; most notably RFC 2616, from June 1999, which defined HTTP/1.1.
